Sencha Asanoka 2023 - Yuuki-Cha

I also bought this tea in 2022 and had mixed feelings, and the same happened this year.

Origin: Hioki, Kagoshima, Japan

Cultivar: 100% Asanoka

Steaming: fukamushicha (deep-steamed)

Price: 1800 JPY/ 100g

At least the dry tea looks nice, featuring light green stems alongside the green leaves. It smells very fresh and green.

First infusion — 40 seconds, 3.5g per 100 ml

It comes out slightly herbal, fairly sweet, but a bit watery. There’s also a slight astringency. Nothing special, but it’s not bad either.

Second infusion, short at 20 seconds — sweetness comes to the forefront, there’s also slight astringency, but less compared to the first infusion.

Third infusion — 60 seconds — noticeably more watery. I would expect more intensity from a fukamushicha; sweetness is the only thing that saves this tea.

It’s an okay tea for daily drinking, but at this price you can find better teas, and I wouldn’t buy this one a second (third) time.

It smells more like gyokuro, very sweet with umami notes. Since it's a fukamushicha, the leaves are quite fine and entirely coated with matcha.
